One Boat and a Whole Lot of Metalcore Music: Our ShipRocked Love Story

We’re that couple who schedules life around tour dates and thinks midnight is the perfect time for a YouTube music video marathon (headbanging and dancing included, obviously). So when we stumbled on ShipRocked, a floating rock festival that basically herds thousands of metalheads onto a cruise ship and then lets us loose on Caribbean islands, it was never just a vacation. It was destiny. Or at least, our new annual tradition.

This is four years, four sailings, and a whole lot of ports we turned into our own personal playgrounds. If you and your partner think heavy music is a love language and you’ve ever wondered if the islands are worth more than a quick stumble off the boat, then buckle up. This one’s for you.

2023: Where It All Started: Falling In Reverse, Parkway Drive, and Two Islands We'll Never Forget

Our first ShipRocked set sail January 22–28, 2023, aboard the Carnival Magic, leaving from Port Canaveral, Florida. It was the 13th edition and the first stretched to a full six days, with headliners Falling In Reverse and Parkway Drive (the Aussies’ first U.S. appearance in years) backed by Nothing More, Skillet, Suicidal Tendencies, Motionless In White, and a stacked roster of more than a dozen others. Over 4,000 ShipRockers were aboard, and you could feel it.
We hit Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas, Grand Turk in Turks & Caicos, and Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic. Two of those stops became the birthplace of what we now call our port-day philosophy: actually see the island, not just the duty-free shops by the dock.

Amber Cove, Dominican Republic

This was the day we decided Margaritaville was the place to hang out! Swim-up pool bar, margaritas, Jimmy Buffett music, and literally the band members from Nothing More lounging behind us! I don’t think I will ever recover from such a great day.
Normally, Amber Cove people head to the Damajagua Waterfalls to jump, slide, and flail through a chain of natural pools, but we already did that together back in 2018. We wanted the full rock experience, so we joined pretty much everyone on the ship at the pool they rented out for us to join in on the festivities Ask4 had planned, like the Belly flop contest and so much more. People zip-lining over us while we soaked in the sun.

We came home from 2023 sunburned, with hoarse throats, and 100% addicted. No regrets.

2024: The Famous Monster Year: I Prevail, Highly Suspect, Badflower, and That Crazy Day In Jamaica

For 2024, the boat switched things up and left from Miami, sailing February 4–10 on the Carnival Magic. This was the “Famous Monster” year (the costumes were next-level), headlined by I Prevail, with killer bands like Beartooth, Dead Poet Society, Highly Suspect, Badflower, Black Stone Cherry, and a lineup so long I lost count. Cabins sold out in three days before anyone even knew who was playing. That’s how wild this community is.
The 2024 route handed us three ports we’d never set foot on: Bimini in the Bahamas, Ocho Rios in Jamaica, and Grand Cayman, but only Jamaica made the full stop. That week, wild weather canceled our stops in Bimini and Grand Cayman. Our favorite music didn’t rock our trip, but neither did that one crazy day in Jamaica.

From Cascades to Chaos

We did get to climb Dunn’s River Falls, swim under the falls, and leap into the deep pools at the Blue Hole. This excursion also included a private lunch and drinks afterward in a beautiful park by the river. After our delicious Jamaican chicken dish and rum cocktails, we headed back to the ship for another night of amazing music.

However, our ship left port after we learned on Facebook that it had crashed into the side of the new dock in Jamaica where we disembarked. Instead of bringing us back to the ship, they started porting people from other excursions to our area. We had to wait until they would let us bus back to port. Eight hours, if not more, went by. We were finally allowed to get on a large bus and head back. We stood in line at the port with 3000 other Shiprockers for another 2 to 3 hours. It was wild!

By then, everyone was hungry, needed to use the bathroom, and was upset about missing anything happening onboard. Once we got back on and showered, we hit the buffet and tried to make an evening out of it. We apparently got very lucky with the excursion we booked. Hundreds of others were dropped off at this big park with no shade, no food, and nothing to drink. Wild, wild day in Jamaica that I don’t think any of us want to experience again.

But hey, we were definitely booking for 2025 either way.

2025: Gave Us ’80s Vibes Where Parkway Drive and Nothing More Returned, and a Romantic Day in St. Thomas

Shiprocked love story husband and wife 80s
The 2025 sailing went full ‘80s with big hair, neon, and Def Leppard vibes everywhere. We sailed January 19–25 out of Miami on the Carnival Magic. Parkway Drive came back to headline (they were the most requested band because of 2023), joined by Nothing More, Hollywood Undead, The Struts, 10 Years, Atreyu, Buckcherry, The Ghost Inside, P.O.D., and a lineup that felt nostalgically endless. The whole boat was basically a time machine.

This route hit St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Half Moon Cay before heading home. St. Thomas? Easily our most romantic port yet.

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

We rented a jeep and drove around the entire island, up and down the miraculous hills. From up there, the water looked like a large pool of sapphires, turquoise, and larimar. We made several stops along the way to take in as many beautiful views as possible. Before turning in the rental, we stopped at a quaint, new restaurant on the beach that felt like it existed just for us. Sometimes you can make your own excursion. We were so ready for the 2026 trip before we got off the boat.

2026: Rock Gods and Greek Myth: Motionless In White, AWOLNATION, and Aurorawave

The most recent sailing, ShipRocked 2026, was the 16th edition and a big one for us. It ran January 25–31, 2026, and upgraded to the bigger Carnival Horizon, leaving from Miami with a Greek-mythology theme. Everyone channeled their inner rock god or goddess.
The lineup was stacked: Halestorm closed the festival with a special set on the ship the last night before we left Nassau, with Motionless In White and Knocked Loose also headlining, plus Wage War, AWOLNATION, Suicidal Tendencies, Avatar, Starset, Sleep Theory, From Ashes To New, and more than 25 bands total.

Half Moon Cay

The first year we got off the boat to join everyone for beach party day. The only reason this time was a new band we discovered through Shiprock’s playlist: Auroawave, headlining on the beach that day. My husband hates sand, hates it! But this overcast, sandy beach day put the biggest smile on his face. The guys from Auroawave killed it! At the end of the show, they stayed and took pictures with us, gave my husband a signed set list, and it’s just a memory we’ll be replaying for years.

Nassau, Bahamas

We’ve never been Atlantis-type people, so we didn’t go, but we had a beautiful view of it from our 9th-floor balcony. This was a day to catch up on the smaller bands we hadn’t heard before, along with some in-between naps. My husband isn’t a Halestorm fan, but we listened to them on our balcony and watched the many jealous faces of other cruisers on nearby ships docked in Nassau.

Final Thoughts As a Serial Shiprocker

Here’s the thing nobody tells you about a metalcore cruise: you come for the bands (and trust me, the bands are unreal), but you leave with way more than just concert memories. You leave with a whole Caribbean love story, just for the two of us.

See you on the next sailing. Bring your horns!
